Thirthahalli: A 35-year-old woman, Akshata, from Hodala Aralapura village in Thirthahalli taluk, died at Meggan Hospital in Shivamogga on Saturday, eight days after consuming poison. Her death has led to allegations of domestic harassment by her parents, while her husband’s family has denied the allegations and claimed that financial difficulties linked to loans were behind the incident.
According to official sources, Akshata had consumed poison in an incident reported nine days before her death. She was subsequently admitted to hospital for treatment but died on Saturday.
Her parents have lodged a complaint alleging that domestic harassment drove her to take the extreme step. Following the complaint, Thirthahalli Police registered a case against four members of her husband’s family, including her husband, Purushottama, and her mother-in-law.
The allegations have not yet been established, and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Married for eight years, couple had two children
Akshata had married Purushottama, a resident of the same village, around eight years ago. The couple have two children, according to the information available in the case.
The incident has raised concerns within the family and the local community, as the circumstances leading to her consumption of poison remain under investigation.
Her parents have alleged that she faced domestic harassment. Their complaint prompted the police to register a case against four members of her husband’s family.
The allegations will need to be examined as part of the investigation, including statements from the complainants and the accused family members, along with any other relevant evidence.
Husband’s family cites loan-related financial pressure
Members of Purushottama’s family have refuted the allegations of domestic harassment. They have claimed that Akshata had taken substantial loans from multiple sources, including self-help groups and microfinance companies, and suggested that financial pressure was linked to the incident.
These claims represent the husband’s family’s version of events and have not been independently established. The financial circumstances surrounding the case, like the allegations made by Akshata’s parents, remain subject to police investigation.
The conflicting accounts have left investigators with the task of determining the circumstances that preceded the incident. Establishing the facts will require the police to examine the complaint, record statements and assess the available evidence.
Police investigation underway
Thirthahalli Police have registered a case against four members of the family, including the husband and mother-in-law, following the complaint filed by Akshata’s parents.
The investigation is ongoing. Police are expected to examine the allegations of harassment and the counterclaims concerning loans and financial pressure before determining the facts of the case.
No conclusion has been established regarding the cause of the incident or responsibility for Akshata’s death. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
