Mysuru: Sosale Math Seer Vidyamanohara Swamiji, who is facing charges of selling off Math’s property including gold plates and a silver chariot has finally stepped down owing to public pressure.
Several cases stand registered against the seer in various police stations.
It is said that the seer had sold off lot of jewellery belonging to the temple, including a crown granted by the Vijayanagara emperor Krishnadevaraya. He had also sold land and leased properties belonging to the mutt in Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh.
The seer was arrested following complaints from several devotees and was out on bail recently.
The pressured kept mounting from devotees demanding the seer to step down. However, he clung on to the position brushing aside the demands. A sudden decision to abdicate the position has surprised the devotees of the Math.
But, the seer has clarified that he has not stepped down fearing the allegations and cases.
As per sources, the Math will see its new seer in Dr Praveen, who take charge as the ‘Peethadyaksha’ soon.
According to the tradition, a seer appointing his grandson as a successor is prohibited. However, Vidyamanohara got to this position by breaking it, say devotees.
