Mysuru: Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy recently emphasized the prohibition of manual scavenging and the ongoing efforts for the rehabilitation of manual scavengers. During a meeting of the District-level Awareness and Incharge Committee in Siddarthanagar, Reddy highlighted the need for officials to expedite the issuance of title deeds for land allotted to rehabilitated scavengers and ensure adequate facilities are provided to them.

Reddy directed the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) to allocate two acres of land within a month to construct a Community Hall for Safai Karmacharis from the Adi Dravida community at Hebbal Colony. Additionally, he instructed officials to issue title deeds to Safai Karmacharis residing in Chilkunda village, Hunsur taluk, for the past 50 years. The Deputy Commissioner also emphasized the importance of supporting the education of manual scavengers’ children by providing tablets for students from eighth standard to Second PUC and covering their school fees.

The meeting also addressed health check-ups for Pourakarmikas and the priority of rehabilitated scavengers in recruitment for Pourakarmika positions by urban local bodies (ULBs).

In a separate meeting, Reddy reviewed progress on various revenue department services, including crop relief, rain damage assessments, Aadhaar seeding, and land issues. He stressed the prompt resolution of cases related to podi and farmer suicides and announced bi-weekly progress review meetings for officials.
