Vegetable prices in Mysuru have been experiencing significant fluctuations recently, posing challenges to local growers. The volatility is attributed to unpredictable market conditions exacerbated by varying weather patterns.
Price Instability Details
According to Mysuru APMC data, the price of beans soared from Rs 60 per kilogram on June 9-10 to Rs 125 on June 18. Similarly, tomatoes, which were Rs 25 per kilogram on June 1, doubled to Rs 50 per kilogram, reaching Rs 75 in retail markets.
Growers’ Concerns
Farmers like Ganesh from Nanjangud express frustration over the unpredictability, noting that recent price hikes do not benefit them due to earlier losses during the drought in May.
Market Dynamics
Badagalapura Nagendra, president of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, criticized the role of traders and agents, suggesting they profit from these price fluctuations to the detriment of growers.
Impact of Weather
Data from KSNDMC shows excess rainfall across southern districts in June, including Mysuru (20%), Mandya (79%), and Chamarajanagar (95%), which likely contributed to market instability.
