Mysuru: A seven and half year old Asiatic lioness, Ranitha died on Wednesday after a prolonged period of illness, at Mysuru zoo.
According to Mysuru zoo officials, the lioness died after being under medical care for last one and half month. She had fierce fight with fellow lions on Oct 26 and was severely injured. The incident had affected her to the extent that she had stopped taking feeds and her mobility too was restricted. Blood examination revealed generalized infection and accordingly treatment was initiated.
The blood samples, lacrimal, nasal and swab samples have been sent to Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad. Experts were called and thorough examination was also done following her death. The postmortem was conducted later in the day and the results are awaited.
C Ravishankar, Executive Director Mysuru zoo said “Though we tried our level best and provided best treatment we couldn’t save Ranitha. She was brought through animal exchange program from Sakkarbaugh Zoo, Junagadh in Gujarat. Once we get report from the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, we can confirm exact reason for the death.”
