Madikeri: “Narendra Modi became Prime Minister by bowing down to the Indian Constitution. Now, the same man is attempting to shoot it, ‘Godse style’,” said senior literarian Devanur Mahadeva.

Addressing an anti-CAA rally of progressive thinkers on Saturday, January 11 he said, “Nathuram Godse first bowed down out of respect for Mahatma Gandhi for achieving freedom for the country, and her then shot him dead. PM Modi is also doing the same thing by implementing the CAA and NRC. He is attempting to gun down the Indian Constitution. He is questioning the citizenship of the same people who voted for him. This is very strange. He is not bothered about the socio-economic issues.”

“The fight is between 1 percent of communal forces and 99 percent true Indians,” he added.

Social activist and former convenor of the Bajrang Dal Mahendra Kumar said that the BJP and the RSS were religiously biased and were dividing the country on the same principles.

Another social activist and former RSS pracharak Niket Raj Maurya termed the protest against the CAA and NRC as a ‘second freedom struggle’.

‘CAA is to protect 130-crore people of India’

BJP MLA K G Bopaiah, addressing the gathering at a CAA awareness programme on Saturday, said that the Act was implemented for the benefit of 130 crore Indians.

He said, “The Congress and Left parties are opposing the CAA and NRC. If the Act disturbs the social fabric of the country, then the Supreme Court should have brought a stay order on it. But nothing of that sort has happened. The Congress and other Opposition parties say that the Act is unconstitutional. When it has been passed in both the Houses of the Parliament, with a majority and has been signed by the President of India, then it becomes the duty of every citizen of this country to abide by it. Why was the Congress quiet when the Bill was passed in the Parliament?”

“The Congress party is trying to provoke and instigate the Muslims against the CAA. If you observe the behaviour of the Congress leaders, it looks like that they are more interested in the betterment of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan than India,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bopaiah urged the ‘anti-CAA’ group to remove stickers asking the people not to entertain pro-CAA people or allow them to enter their houses, as it was subjected to legal consequences since the Act was passed constitutionally.
