Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) has urged the police department to seal Kodagu district borders during the government sponsored Tipu Jayanthi celebrations to prevent anti-social elements from carrying out organised attacks to incite trouble.

Addressing the media, CNC President N U Nachappa said there were possibilities of communal elements inciting trouble in the district during the event on Novemeber 10 as most businessmen and traders heading towards Kasaragod, Wayanad and Kannur districts pass through Kodagu .

Anti-social elements might use the opportunity to disturb peace by inciting trouble, Nachappa warned.

The vehicles bearing Kerala registration (KL) numbers must be banned during that period and traffic diverted via Gundlupet and Sakleshpur to prevent incidents of violence, Nachappa urged.

The government must install sophisticated CCTV cameras at border check points, keep close tab on mobile telephone calls and intensify patrolling to prevent anti-social elements from gaining easy access to incite communal tension, he cautioned.

Letters have already been sent to the prime minister, home minister and the external affairs minister highlighting the key points to ensure violent incidents of 2015 do not recur, N U Nachappa stated.

The government should have dropped the plan of celebrations but gave fillip to the opinion of certain local leaders and went ahead with the plan to organise Tipu Jayanthi. Local leaders should have appraised the government but they failed in doing so, Nachappa rued.

The government should have dedicated the day to pay homage to the martyrs of Devatti Parambu massacre by Tipu Sultan in 1785 instead of glorifying him, Nachappa opined. Even peace loving Muslims should oppose the proposed celebrations, he urged.

The police administration has taken few measures to ensure peace but more needs to be done, Nachappa said

Pulletira Kaalappa and Kapudira Saabu were present.
