Madikeri: The Madikeri City Municipal Corporation (CMC) has decided to get rid of the age old containers by terming them obsolete and the tipper trucks will henceforth collect the door-to-door waste, according to CMC Commissioner B Shubha.
The existing 28 obsolete containers will be auctioned and the TMC will seek additional funds from the government towards waste management. Door-to-door collection of waste will be done by tipper trucks in future and CCTV cameras will be installed at strategic points to trace people littering in the open.
Some containers will be retained for two months based on members’ request and in the meantime awareness will be created among the residents on waste disposal.
One member Unnikrishna offered to provide his mini tipper thrice a week with driver to assess the waste collection before ordering them in bulk. The member’s decision too was widely appreciated during the meeting.
The decision to replace containers with tippers was taken to reduce the costs as well as free the city from containers. It is gathered that the state government has appreciated the CMC move and is inclined to allocate more funds for buying tipper trucks to keep the city clean.
Some opposition members raised objection on hiring labourers for CMC through contractors. They alleged that the contractors not only pay less to the labourers but also delay salaries. In response, the CMC commissioner assured the members of suitable action.
