Madikeri: Tension has gripped the entire Coorg district after the government decided to go ahead with Tipu Jayanthi celebrations this year despite extensive opposition.
The district administration has made elaborate arrangements on security to prevent untoward incidents. Prohibitory orders have been clamped in the district. A local committee opposing the celebrations has called for district bandh. The police marched on the roads and have taken enough measures in sensitive areas to reassure people. However, people in the district are still living in fear after last year’s incidents where deaths occurred.
Some Muslim organizations like Nusthatul Islam Madrasa of Balale have opposed the government’s move on Tipu Jayanthi said that none asked for such celebrations. They accused the political parties of gaining political mileage out of the situation and confirmed that Islam does not believe in glorifying Tipu. They insisted that in Islam religion, there is no provision for such celebrations. They want the government to call off the celebration which is dividing the local peace loving communities on religious lines.
Even Shri Cauvery Amma Kodava cultural forum too has opposed the Tipu Jayanti celebrations.
Most affected of all, the tourism industry has no takers for hotels, resorts, spas and home stays. Tourists have preferred to stay away from the district during this period.
Every peace loving citizen in the district wishes to see the clock tick past midnight on November 10 and social life to remain serene on a misty winter morning, next day.
