Mandya: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will now investigate the death of a sandalwood thief, whose body was found in a canal eight days after the forest officials apprehended him on October 8.

The body of deceased identified as Ravi, a resident of Krishnapura Village was found in a canal near Hunaganalli Colony on October 14. It is reported that the body was found with hands allegedly being tied up with a piece of cloth.

Basaralu police sources stated that Ravi and his accomplice Subrahmanya allegedly entered Belasinda Forest area of Hassan District and cut a sandalwood tree. Thus, while the patrolling forest officers apprehended them, Ravi reportedly managed to escape when officers were in search of motorbike used to commit the crime.

Further, the forest officers filed a case at Chanarayapattana Police Station under Section 224 (resistance against lawful apprehension) of IPC, and the complaint was registered on October 14.

Since there is an allegation and suspicion of custodial death, the case has been handed over to CID for further investigation as per rules.
