Mysuru: The premiere Mysuru Medical College and Research Institute (MMC), which is also one of the oldest medical colleges in India is putting its efforts to enhance its MBBS seats to 250. The oldest medical college in the state has 150 seats at present. If the seats are increased, the poor meritorious student will stand to benefit. MMC and RI with the intake of three students may start PG and Diploma in Psychiatry.

If the Medical Council of India gives its nod from the next academic year, the MBBS seats at MMC and RI will be enhanced from 150 to 250. In this regard, a team from MMC and RI including Dean and Director Dr. C P Nanjaraj and other staff members had visited MCI, Delhi, recently.

Speaking to Newskarnataka, Dr. Nanjaraj said, “We are putting our efforts to enhance the existing seats from 150 to 250. In this regard, we also had a meeting with the MCI officials. To accommodate 250 students we should also enhance our capacity in the existing halls and also need to construct a few halls with a capacity of 250 people. Minimum, we need to have four halls with nearly 250 capacity each. Apart from existing men’s and women’s hostel with 150 capacity each, we need two hostels with minimum 300 capacity each. We are hopeful of getting approval from MCI and from the next academic year, if everything goes well, we may get the nod to increase the seats.”

MMC RI may get the nod from the health ministry to start a PG and diploma course in Psychiatry from this academic year: “For the past three years, we are trying for PG and Diploma course in Psychiatry. For approval purposes, MCI is conducting an investigation. We have requested for three seats. We are positive that we may get approval to start the course from this academic year and may start with an intake of three. In India, there is great demand for psychiatry”, added Dr. Nanjaraj. In private medical colleges, if one has to pursue a career in PG Psychiatry, they need to cough up more than a crore.
