Mysuru: No sooner one mentions Mysore, the thoughts of jasmine, beetle-leaves, Mysore Pak flashes.  Each one is distinct in introducing Mysore.  Moreover, the palaces built by erstwhile rulers, majestic Dasara celebrations are world famous.  When compared to other cities in the world, Mysore gets top slot in terms of palaces, heritage buildings, culture among the several firsts.  Mysore is renowned as cultural city, palace city and heritage city and heaven for retirement.

Nevertheless, the 25 kings of Mysore dynasty contributed immensely during their reign from 1399 to 1950.  The majority of kings were courageous, poets, litterateurs, patriots, masters in governance, art lovers that contributed for Mysore to develop as significant cultural city.  The petty rulers of Mysore dynasty annexed their kingdoms by heroic means to make it leading rulers in India and its fame extended to rest of the world.

If one turns the history books….

As one turns the history books, one will come across how the princely state of Mysore flourished during their reign and also how the name Mysore prevailed based on mythological text.  Chamundi hills prove this point.  It’s during the mythological era, there lived a monster by the name, Mahisasura who attained divine power exceeding in possession of Lord Shiva out of his strenuous penance.  Armed with this power, Mahisasura was troubling the people including goddesses.  The people no more can tolerate the troubles; plead goddess Chamundeshwari to save them from him.  She declared a war on Mahisasura, as the sword battle was in progress between them, there emerged several monsters like Mahisasura out of the every drop of blood fell on the ground from Mahisasura’s body.  Chamundeshwari who realized the powers of Mahisasura sought the help of her sister Uttana.  Uttana managed to hold the drops of blood falling from the body of Mahisasura by spreading her huge tongue.  At that very moment, Chamundeshwari took a wild attack on Mahisasura and finished him off.  The land where Mahisasura lived was known as Maisoor and gradually changed to Mysore that is being known since tenth century. As per the stone inscriptions that were found in and around the city, it gives the information that the kingdom of Mysore formed out of 70 villages.

Mysore city, palace, beautiful gardens, lakes, heritage buildings and broader roads, all this makes Mysore a beautiful city.  Although there are no mega industries here, it’s become a top commercial hub.  There are colleges to facilitate education of every sphere.  It lies 2,525 feet above sea level, where the summers are cooler and winters are pleasant.  It has moderate weather all year round.  Therefore, the tourists arrive all days of the year.

The world famous Amba Vilas palace, Krishnarajasagar (KRS) dam located along beautiful gardens, zoo, Chamundi hills, lakes, different historical temples, masjids, churches are the tourists hot spots in Mysore.  There are other tourists’ spots in the outskirts of Mysore and a heaven for tourists.  Mysore Masala, Mysore Pak, Mysore jasmine, Mysore headgear, Mysore beetle-leaves etc, have its own unique features.

The palace city that is flocked by innumerable tourists throughout the year should have developed further, but none knows, because that kind of developments has not taken place.  Whatever may be the case, none can compare Mysore for any other city.
