Mysuru: The efforts of the district administration to conduct SVEEP programmes to spread awareness about the importance of voting, has resulted in a slight enhancement in the voting percentage across the district. During the previous parliamentary election, the voting percentage in the district was 67.30. This time, the percentage rose to 68.14 per cent.

Zilla Panchayat CEO Jyothi, who took up the responsibility of conducting the SVEEP programme said, “We spread voter awareness through SVEEP soon after the election dates were announced. Almost 1,600 different methods including cylothons, marathons, various street plays, walkathons, selfie points at the Mysuru Zoo and other tourists places and various events at the Mysuru Palace were conducted to spread awareness. This seems to have created more awareness among the people. These programmes were also held in other districts including Haveri, Bagalkot and Belagavi. Our aim was to reach a voter turnout of nearly 70 to 75 per cent.”

Expressing her surprise at the relatively low turnout, she said, “It is surprising that the people in Mysuru city have not come out in large numbers to vote. Perhaps the people went out of town as it is a weekend. The election authorities will make better plans and strategies in the days to come to combat this.”
