Mysuru: A couple from Mysuru is being searched for by Delhi Police in connection with an alleged cheating case involving a retired Army Colonel who reportedly lost more than ₹41 lakh in cash, bank transfers and jewellery.

The accused, identified as M.G. Sumanth and Sahana Sumanth, are reportedly residents of Jayalakshmipuram in Mysuru. Two police officers from the Naraina Vihar Police Station in West Delhi recently visited Mysuru in search of the couple, who are alleged to have remained absconding.

The case has been compared by Star of Mysore to the storyline of the Bollywood film Bunty Aur Babli, as the couple allegedly gained the confidence of their victim by presenting different stories before seeking financial assistance.

Retired Colonel files complaint in Delhi

The case was registered following a complaint by Col. (retd.) Pankaj Punit Singh, a resident of Delhi.

According to the FIR registered at Naraina Vihar Police Station, Sumanth and Sahana allegedly approached the retired Colonel and gained his trust. Sumanth reportedly introduced himself as a landing gear analyst working with Airbus in Houston, Texas, and claimed to be earning a substantial salary.

The FIR alleges that the couple initially sought a relatively small amount of money from the Colonel before making repeated requests for financial assistance.

Police have registered the case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, and Section 3(5), concerning acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention.

Over ₹35 lakh allegedly transferred

According to the complaint, Sumanth allegedly told the retired Colonel that his Indian bank accounts had been frozen because of tax-related issues.

Between July 2024 and February 2025, the Colonel allegedly provided more than ₹35 lakh to Sumanth through a combination of bank transactions and cash payments.

The FIR reportedly states that Sumanth issued several signed post-dated cheques to the complainant as assurances for repayment.

However, when the Colonel allegedly attempted to deposit the cheques, they were dishonoured.

The complainant subsequently approached the police, leading to registration of the case and investigation into the alleged financial transactions.

Jewellery worth around ₹6 lakh also alleged to be missing

The complaint contains another allegation involving jewellery.

According to the FIR, Sumanth allegedly told the Colonel in January 2025 that he was travelling to Bengaluru to resolve the tax-related issue concerning his bank accounts.

The complaint alleges that around this period, a suitcase containing jewellery worth approximately ₹6 lakh was taken from the Colonel’s residence.

With the alleged cash, bank transfers and jewellery taken together, the total value involved in the complaint is reported to be around ₹41 lakh.

These allegations remain part of the police case and have not been established by a court.

Delhi court issues proclamation notices

The case is being heard before the Judicial Magistrate First Class-08 at Patiala House Courts in New Delhi.

According to the report, the court issued separate proclamation notices against Sumanth and Sahana on August 7, 2026, directing them to appear before the court.

Following the court’s order, two police officers from Naraina Vihar Police Station travelled to Mysuru to trace the couple.

The visit was aimed at locating the accused and taking further action in accordance with the legal process.

Delhi Police search for Mysuru couple

The couple’s reported Mysuru address is in the Jayalakshmipuram area, at Badami Building behind B.M. Hospital, according to the report.

Delhi Police are now seeking information that could help establish the whereabouts of the two accused.

Police have appealed to members of the public who may have information about Sumanth and Sahana to approach the nearest police station or contact the Station House Officer of Naraina Vihar Police Station.

The search follows the court’s proclamation notices and the couple’s reported failure to appear before the court.

Case under investigation

The allegations against the couple centre on claims that they gained the confidence of the retired Colonel before allegedly obtaining money and jewellery from him.

The police investigation will have to establish the circumstances surrounding the transactions, the relationship between the complainant and accused, the authenticity and purpose of the post-dated cheques, and the circumstances surrounding the alleged removal of the jewellery.

As the investigation and court proceedings continue, the allegations in the FIR should not be treated as a finding of guilt.

The case also demonstrates how alleged financial deception can involve establishing personal trust before repeated requests for money are made. However, the exact sequence of events and the accused persons’ explanations, if any, will be examined through the legal process.

Police appeal for information

Delhi Police are continuing efforts to locate the accused in Mysuru.

People with information about the whereabouts of M.G. Sumanth and Sahana Sumanth have been asked to contact the nearest police station or the Naraina Vihar Police Station.

Further developments are expected as police proceed with the investigation and court proceedings.
