Mysuru: The Mysuru City Police’s anti-drug initiative ‘Operation Vimukthi’ has begun yielding results, with authorities detecting four drug-related cases based on information received through a dedicated WhatsApp helpline launched to curb narcotics consumption and peddling.
The WhatsApp helpline (82779-48080) was introduced to encourage citizens to report drug abuse and trafficking anonymously. According to City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, the helpline has received 65 complaints so far, leading to the detection of four cases, seizure of narcotic substances and legal action against those involved.
Helpline helps police detect drug cases
Speaking to Star of Mysore, Commissioner Latkar said police identified two drug users and one peddler during the operation. Authorities seized 62 grams and 49 grams of narcotic substances in the cases.
Investigations are also underway into a complaint involving a paying guest (PG) hostel and several youths suspected of consuming and selling drugs.
The Commissioner urged citizens to use the helpline responsibly and avoid filing false or frivolous complaints, stressing that genuine information would strengthen the city’s anti-drug campaign.
NDPS cases surge in Mysuru
Official data obtained from the City Police Commissioner’s Office under the Right to Information (RTI) Act shows a sharp rise in cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Mysuru City registered 491 NDPS cases in 2025, compared to 43 cases in 2024 and 62 cases in 2023, marking an increase of more than 1,042 per cent over the previous year.
In 2026, police have registered 236 NDPS cases so far, including 199 cases related to drug consumption. A total of 293 accused have been arrested, while 213 drug users have been profiled.
Between 2023 and 2026, Mysuru City recorded 832 NDPS cases, with drug consumption accounting for 434 of the 491 cases registered in 2025, highlighting the growing challenge posed by substance abuse in the city.
