The Sericulture Department is finalizing plans to establish a permanent cocoon auction market in Mysuru, with a proposed two-acre site being identified for construction. The current facility, located in a rented space at Bandipalya APMC yard, is increasingly unable to accommodate the growing demands of the region’s 35,438 sericulturists.
Currently, the market operates on an 80ft x 37ft plot, with a capacity to handle just three tonnes of cocoon per day. However, with the steady rise in cocoon arrivals due to the expansion of sericulture cultivation and government initiatives, the market’s capacity is being strained. In the 2023-24 period alone, the market recorded 358.6 tonnes of cocoon arrivals by December, a significant increase from previous years.
As a result, the Sericulture Department has requested the district administration and APMC for the allocation of two acres of land to build a permanent market facility. The department’s appeal has been positively received, with the district in-charge secretary directing the authorities to complete the land transfer process, which is now in its final stages.
Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts have a combined 35,438 sericulturists, cultivating around 13,780 hectares. The existing market, established seven years ago, was initially intended to provide easier access for farmers in these districts, who previously had to travel long distances to markets in other regions.
