Good news for Mysuru residents and visitors who were awaiting the launch of the Rail Coach Restaurant at Swami Vivekananda Park—plans have shifted to bring two such dining spaces to the city. The South Western Railway (SWR), Mysuru Division, is set to establish two Rail Coach Restaurants, one at the Mysuru City Railway Station and another at Chamarajapuram Railway Station.
The earlier proposal for the Vivekananda Park location was put on hold after receiving no responses to the tender issued on November 13, 2024. Public objections regarding parking issues and the potential cutting down of trees led to the reconsideration. However, the two new locations are expected to cater to a large crowd, with Mysuru City Railway Station seeing a daily footfall of 55,000 passengers, and Chamarajapuram Station attracting around 5,000 visitors on average.
The Rail Coach Restaurants will use old decommissioned coaches, each capable of seating 40-50 people. These one-of-a-kind dining establishments, already present in Bengaluru and Hubballi, will offer a blend of vintage railway charm and modern amenities. The restaurants aim to provide passengers with high-quality food and beverages in a nostalgic setting, while also promoting sustainability through the reuse of old coaches.
SWR is inviting eligible contractors to bid for the project through an e-auction on January 20, 2025, via the IREPS portal.
