Mysuru: Six Dalits have been assaulted by upper caste youth for entering their locality in Arasinakere village in Jayapura Hobli of Mysuru District on Friday January 14.

According to sources, five people have been arrested, and additional police officers have been deployed to the village to prevent any untoward incident.

The six Dalits were on their way to get snacks from a pushcart when an upper caste youth confronted them, informed the police. Others in the village intervened and settled them down. However, upper-caste youth later entered house of Dalits and assaulted them.

Following a complaint, the Jayapura police arrested five people on Friday. However, Mahadevaswamy, a villager, filed a counter-complaint accusing five Dalits of attempting to murder him. He demanded that the culprits be brought to justice and that Dalit families be protected.

SP R. Chethan of Mysuru (Rural) made a visit to the village, interacted with both groups, and assured to take action.
