Mysuru: The injured elephant calf which was treated recently has not been traced since last five days at Nagarahole in the District.

It can be recalled here that Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi visited Nagarahole during Bharat Jodo Yatra, noticed the injured calf and sought Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai for the treatment. After Rahul Gandhi’s letter, CM Bommai ordered Forest Department officials to treat the injured elephant calf. However now the calf is not traceable since last five days.

A portion of the elephant calf’s trunk and its tail had been ripped off by wild dogs while there were grievous injuries on the abdomen as well. Maggots too had set in.

The veterinarians had administered antibiotics and painkillers and the second round of medication was due after five days post first round of treatment. However, the treatment had got delayed. Despite forest guards combing the area, the calf could not be traced. If the mother has abandoned the calf, it is now speculated to be dead.
