Mysuru: N Rathna, a distinguished figure in theater and speech therapy, passed away at the age of 89 due to a heart attack at his residence in Saraswathipuram on Wednesday morning.

Born on December 12, 1934, in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, N Rathna pursued his education in Mysore and later in the United States. His illustrious career began with his appointment as the first director of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) upon its establishment in 1966. His leadership and innovative work in speech therapy have left a lasting impact on the field.

In addition to his contributions to speech and hearing therapy, Rathna was a passionate theater enthusiast. He founded a renowned theater troupe in Mysuru, producing several acclaimed plays and radio dramas that enriched the cultural fabric of the region. His artistic endeavors earned him numerous accolades, including the Karnataka Nataka Academy Award in 2005 and the Rajyotsava Award in 2013.

Rathna’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements. He is remembered for his dedication to his work and his ability to inspire others. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. The funeral arrangements will take place in Mysuru later on Wednesday.
