Mysuru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address on Sunday, highlighted the environmental efforts of the Karma Kagyu Monastery in Bylakuppe, located in Periyapatna taluk of Mysuru district, and praised its role in nature conservation.
The Prime Minister cited the monastery as a model of harmony between spirituality and environmental responsibility, underscoring how Buddhist traditions emphasise a deep connection with nature.
Monastery’s eco-efforts draw national attention
Referring to the initiative, Modi noted that the Tibetan settlement in Bylakuppe has transformed a once barren landscape into a thriving green zone spread over nearly 100 acres.
“The Tibetan settlement area in Karnataka is spread over 100 acres. It has been transformed into a forest, preserving over 700 indigenous tree species,” he said.
He added that the effort reflects the Buddhist philosophy, recalling that Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment under a tree, symbolising the intrinsic bond between human life and nature.
Role of Bodhisattva Trust
The conservation initiative is being carried out under the Bodhisattva Trust, established in 1995 with a focus on environmental protection and restoration.
Under the guidance of religious leaders, the trust has led sustained afforestation efforts in the region, creating a forest conservation zone that now supports a diverse range of indigenous plant species.
The initiative is widely regarded as a successful example of community-driven ecological restoration.
Education rooted in sustainability
The trust also manages the Nalanda School, a gurukul-style institution where monks are trained in sustainable living practices alongside traditional education.
Through this approach, environmental awareness is integrated into daily life and spiritual practice, ensuring that conservation remains a long-term commitment.
Buddha Poornima message
Extending greetings on the occasion of Buddha Poornima, the Prime Minister emphasised the continued relevance of Buddha’s teachings in today’s world.
“Gautama Buddha is more relevant now than ever. Amidst the tensions and conflicts that the world is witnessing today, Buddha’s message of peace and compassion is even more important,” he said.
