Nanjangud: A significant protest unfolded in Nanjungud against the release of water to Tamil Nadu, led by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene. The protest garnered participation from hundreds of farmers who strongly expressed their displeasure towards both the state and central governments for their decisions that seemed to favor Tamil Nadu over Karnataka in the allocation of Cauvery River water.
Vidyasagar, the district president of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, along with representatives from Hasiru Sene, took the podium to address the assembled gathering. They vehemently voiced their discontent over the water release to Tamil Nadu via the Kabini canal. The protestors demanded the immediate closure of all reservoir gates and advocated for prioritizing the water supply to Karnataka’s fields. They stressed that the central government had paid insufficient attention to Karnataka’s concerns and called for swift action.
The protesters advocated for unity between the central government and the Tamil Nadu administration, alleging a collaborative effort that disadvantaged Karnataka. They implored the state government to champion the interests of local farmers by ensuring an adequate water supply to the canals and reservoirs. Key figures in the protest included Imavu Raghupathi, the district chief secretary of the Raitha Sangha, as well as Taluk President Sathish, Kempanna, Shankar Nayak, Manjunath, and several others who actively participated in the demonstration.
