Renowned artists from across India to participate in Gandhi Shilp Bazaar

Mysuru: The craftsmen from across the country will be taking part in the “Gandhi Shilp Bazaar-2017” organised by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, New Delhi, at JSS Urban Haat from November 17 to 26.

This Gandhi Shilp Bazaar will be organised only in the Class–I & II cities of the country, having more than 10 lakh population. Since Mysuru city has more than 10 lakh population and is a tourist place, the department is organising this year’s Gandhi Shilp Bazaar at JSS Mysore Urban Haat. Genuine artisans with a wide variety of crafts including wood, clay, cloth, jewellery and metal are coming together under one platform.

Speaking to Newskarnataka, M Shivananjaswamy, Project Officer, JSS Mysore Urban Haat said, “The uniqueness of handmade crafts is what is most appealing. Some craftspersons use a combination of distinctive glazes, patterns and beautifully crafted pottery in their crafts, while others create functional and decorative crafts by hand-carving. The intricate designs which are a product of these techniques, would be showcased in their display.”

He also said that craftsmen who are national and state awardees will present live demonstrations in art and craft making and display Kasuthi sarees, Tussar silk sarees, Kantha stitch sarees, Banaras sarees and dress materials, boutique sarees and dresses and Bengali cotton sarees.

The participants will also display Kashmiri handlooms, wood carving and furniture from Saharanpur, wood inlay, chikan embroidery, ceramics, Madhubani paintings, Rajasthani miniature paintings, Rajasthani embroidery and footwear, Gujarati dresses, dried flowers, a variety of leather items, various jute products, vegetable print dress materials, artificial and imitation jewellery and gem stone jewellery.

“Marble paintings, Karnataka silk sarees, Chennapattan toys and plenty of terracotta items among other handicraft and handlooms items will also be displayed” added Shivananjaswamy.

The mela has been organised by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, New Delhi. The event will be inaugurated on November 17 at 4 PM by Rajvir Pratap Sharma IPS, ADGP and Managing Director, Karnataka State Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, Bengaluru while C G Betsurmath, Executive Secretary, JSSMVP will preside over the occasion.

S P Manjunath, Secretary-I, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, G Shivashankar, Chief Executive Officer, Zilla Panchayath, Mysuru , Mallikarjunaiah, Regional Director(Southern Region), Ministry of Textiles, Chennai will also be present.

There is no entry fee or parking fee for the exhibition. The exhibition will be open from 10 AM to 9 PM daily.
