Schoolchildren in Mysuru to get flavoured milk?

Mysuru: If everything goes well, then children in Mysuru government schools mayl soon relish on some sweet flavoured milk under the Ksheera Bhagya Scheme.

The Zilla Panchayat is now planning to write a letter to the government urging that flavoured milk should be provided to children under the Scheme instead of the plain milk provided at present.

The ZP will also suggest to the government study if the same can be applied across the state.

As per ZP President Pushpavathi Amarnath, the Central Food technological Research Institute (CFTRI), at the behest of the ZP, had produced three different flavours of milk powder, including vanilla and badam.

She is quoted in the The Hindu saying that since many children were avoiding milk consumption, the ZP thought of making milk consumption appealing to children by providing them flavoured milk.

“Many children had told us that they wanted cattle milk and not the milk made from milk powder. They say that the milk provided at present is unsavoury. Parents too have been complaining that the milk now provided in the schools did not give any health benefits to the kids,” she said adding hence they thought of introducing flavoured milk concept to battle these issues. She adds that most of the children have given a nod to flavoured milk.

However, as per government sources, the government will incur an additional cost of about 10 paise per child to go ahead with the flavoured milk scheme and it would also have to take consent from Karnataka Mlk Federation to bring in flavoured milk powder.

If flavoured milk will be given to children or not is something to be watched out for.
