The bakery unit at Mysuru Central Jail has been temporarily shut down following the tragic deaths of three prisoners who ingested a hazardous liquid essence used in cake preparation. The victims, identified as Nagaraj from Kollegal, Ramesh from Hassan, and Madesh from Sathagalli, faced severe health complications after consuming the chemical.
The inmates were reportedly preparing cakes for the upcoming New Year celebrations when they consumed the liquid essence on December 24. This led to extreme stomach pain, and despite being immediately transported to a hospital for treatment, the three inmates tragically passed away, according to jail authorities.
K.C. Divyashree, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons, has ordered a probe into the incident, with the Chief Judicial Magistrate overseeing a judicial inquiry. The Mandi Mohalla Police have also filed a case, treating the deaths as unnatural and are actively investigating the cause.
To prevent further incidents, the Superintendent of the Central Jail, P.S. Ramesh, confirmed that the bakery unit, which is managed by inmates, has been closed as a safety precaution. The authorities will decide when to resume operations at the facility after the conclusion of the ongoing investigations. This tragic event has sparked concerns about the safety protocols and the proper handling of materials inside the prison.
