Urban, educated individuals more prone to cyber crimes, Mysuru and Mangaluru

Statistics reveal that urban and educated individuals are more vulnerable to cyber crimes compared to those in rural areas. Mysuru police commissionerate recorded 24 cyber crime cases, ranking second after Bengaluru city’s 480 cases. Mangaluru city followed with 21 cases, securing the third spot. Home Minister G Parameshwara shared these figures in the state legislative assembly on Thursday, responding to a question by BJP legislator Pratap Simha Nayak.

Official records show that 27 individuals were arrested in relation to these incidents. In Mysuru City, 28 cases were reported, with victims losing a total of Rs 8.4 crore, of which Rs 26 lakh were recovered. Interestingly, rural areas reported no incidents, and no digital arrest cases were registered in Mysuru Rural. Similarly, while Mangaluru City reported 21 cases, the surrounding Dakshina Kannada police limits had no such incidents.

A CEN police officer explained that digital arrests are unique, often involving loan accounts created under victims’ names after they shared personal details like Aadhaar, PAN, or screen information with scammers. “Police cannot arrest someone over a phone call,” he clarified. Mysuru City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar emphasized a reduction in digital crime incidents due to heightened awareness. “We have been conducting awareness campaigns regularly, including through social media, and as a result, fewer incidents are occurring,” she stated.

The increased public understanding, she added, has led to greater awareness that arrests cannot be made over the phone.
