Youth bags fellowship of Rs 1 crore

Mysuru: Making the state proud, Mysuru youth Syed Usman Taqui has topped the global ranking list for the Erasmus Mundus fellowship, a European scholarship programme.

The fellowship, amounting to 1,29,900 euros, almost equivalent to Rs. 1 crore, has been awarded to facilitate him to pursue his doctoral programme in Membrane Engineering for three years, beginning November 2015.

Mr. Usman, one of five students to be selected for the fellowship, will carry out research in a consortium consisting of six leading partner institutions from Portugal, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, France, Belgium and Italy.

He will be starting his research from Portugal before moving to other partner institutions.

The Erasmus Mundus Doctorate in Membrane Engineering is designed to achieve excellence, innovation, mobility and multi-disciplinary in investigation approaches related to membrane science and technology.

Usman has a part of his roots in Mangaluru, having completed his engineering from P A College of Engineering. He is the son of the former vice-chancellor of Yenepoya University and the former Dean and syndicate member of the University of Mysore, Syed Akheel Ahmed.
