In a major digital initiative, the Central government has enabled more than 50 lakh Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders to access and download their e-OCI cards through a dedicated online portal, making it easier for users to retrieve their documents whenever required.

The move is aimed at streamlining services for OCI cardholders, particularly those who may have misplaced their physical cards or require quick access to their credentials while travelling or completing official formalities.

Easier access to OCI documents

The newly introduced facility allows eligible OCI cardholders to download a digital version of their OCI card from the official portal, reducing dependence on physical copies and simplifying document verification.

The initiative is expected to benefit millions of OCI holders living across the globe by providing a more convenient and secure way to access their records.

Officials said the digital service is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise consular and immigration-related services through technology.

Cardholders still need to update details

While the e-OCI facility makes accessing the document easier, cardholders are still required to update their personal information in accordance with existing OCI regulations.

Changes such as obtaining a new passport, updating personal particulars or modifying other relevant details must continue to be reported through the prescribed process to ensure records remain accurate.

Officials have advised OCI cardholders to verify that their information is up to date before travelling internationally or using the document for official purposes.

The digital initiative is expected to improve convenience for overseas Indians while reducing administrative delays and enhancing access to essential immigration services.
