Gadag: Writer Basavaraj Sulibhavi has issued a stern warning against potential mining activities in Kappatagudda, a region often referred to as the Sahyadri of North Karnataka and a vital lifeline for the local populace. During a press conference held on Friday, Sulibhavi expressed that if mining is permitted, the community will resort to intense protests to protect their environment.

Kappatagudda is more than just a green expanse; it plays a crucial role in the region’s rainfall and supports the livelihoods of the people living in the Bayalu Seeme (plains). Sulibhavi highlighted the area’s significance, stating, “We must protect the wild resources that possess medicinal properties.” He raised concerns over large corporations eyeing the area, noting that foreign companies are particularly eager to exploit these natural resources.

In 2017, Kappatagudda was declared a protected forest area, effectively prohibiting mining activities. This declaration was upheld by the High Court after several companies sought permission to mine the area. Reflecting on past struggles, Sulibhavi recounted how community protests successfully saved Kappatagudda previously and reiterated their readiness to mobilise again if the government moves to allow mining.

Sulibhavi expressed disappointment that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who had previously supported their cause during earlier protests, is now considering mining proposals. He urged District In-charge Minister H.K. Patil to advocate against the mining plans and emphasised the need for the government to resist pressure from mining lobbyists.

“Various research studies have shown the presence of rare medicinal plant species in Kappatagudda,” he stated. “We must make efforts to preserve these resources rather than sacrifice them for corporate interests.”

The press conference saw the presence of several community leaders, including Chandrakant Chavan, J.B. Patil, Balaraj Arabar, Shekhanna Kavalikaya, Sharif Bileyali, Kashinath Bagali, Anil Kale, Parshu Kale, and Basavaraj Bileyali, who all echoed Sulibhavi’s sentiments and pledged their support for the cause.

The potential mining in Kappatagudda has ignited strong sentiments within the community, who are determined to protect their natural resources and heritage. As tensions rise, the call for unity among residents and leaders serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding environmental integrity against industrial pressures.
