A viral video shared by a spectator has raised serious concerns over security at Indian Premier League matches, with allegations that dozens of mobile phones were stolen during a game.

Ritu Tiwary took to social media to describe how her husband’s phone was stolen during an Indian Premier League match, claiming that several other spectators faced a similar experience. The video has since garnered significant attention, crossing over 2.9 lakh views online.

Multiple thefts reported during match

In the video, Tiwary stated that at least 50 to 60 phones were stolen from the P3 stand alone. She explained that her husband realised his phone was missing during the interval when he stepped away to buy water.

At the same time, numerous spectators reportedly began raising similar complaints, indicating that the incident was not isolated.

Complaints filed, FIR registered

Tiwary alleged that when they initially approached police personnel stationed at the stadium, their concerns were not taken seriously. Subsequently, they went to the police station, where several others had gathered with similar complaints.

She stated that a First Information Report (FIR) was filed and that police had detained 10 to 12 suspects, reportedly minors dressed in team jerseys and carrying complimentary tickets.

Allegations of organised crime

The incident has sparked concerns of a larger organised racket operating during high-attendance matches. Tiwary claimed that similar thefts had been reported at other venues, including stadiums in Chennai and Mumbai.

She further noted that many thefts occurred during the second innings, when spectators frequently leave their seats for refreshments, creating opportunities for such crimes.

Public outrage and demand for action

The video has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with users expressing concern over safety and accountability at major sporting events. Many have urged authorities, including local police, to strengthen surveillance and crowd management measures.

The incident has also renewed calls for stricter security protocols at crowded venues to prevent thefts and ensure a safe experience for spectators.
