Victoria: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal, during his two-day State Visit to Seychelles from June 27 to June 29. The visit comes at the invitation of Seychelles President Patrick Herminie, with PM Modi attending the country’s Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour.

Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise believed to be around 194 years old, has become one of the most remarkable living creatures in recorded history. Recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest known terrestrial animal and the oldest turtle ever recorded, Jonathan has lived through nearly two centuries of global history.

The Prime Minister’s visit is also expected to strengthen India-Seychelles ties through discussions on maritime security, tourism, cybersecurity, space cooperation and other strategic sectors.

PM Modi to attend Seychelles National Day celebrations

Prime Minister Modi’s visit marks a significant milestone in the diplomatic relationship between India and Seychelles. This year commemorates the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, built on mutual trust, democratic values and close people-to-people ties.

Ahead of his departure, PM Modi described Seychelles as a valued maritime neighbour and an important partner in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR and its shared commitment towards the Global South.

In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said he looked forward to participating in the Golden Jubilee celebrations and further strengthening bilateral cooperation across several sectors.

The visit is expected to result in multiple agreements covering maritime security, space cooperation, cybersecurity and mutual legal assistance while also giving a boost to tourism and economic collaboration.

Meet Jonathan, the world’s oldest living land animal

One of the highlights of the Prime Minister’s visit will be his meeting with Jonathan, the legendary giant tortoise that has fascinated conservationists and visitors from around the world.

Jonathan was born around 1832, making him approximately 194 years old. His lifespan predates several iconic historical events and landmarks, including the Victorian era, the construction of London’s Tower Bridge and Paris’ Eiffel Tower.

Recognised by Guinness World Records, Jonathan holds the distinction of being the oldest-known living terrestrial animal and the oldest tortoise ever recorded.

Although he belongs to the Seychelles giant tortoise species (Aldabrachelys gigantea hololissa), Jonathan has spent much of his life on the South Atlantic island of St Helena, where he resides in the gardens of the Governor’s residence.

Locally known as “Jono”, Jonathan spends his days alongside three other giant tortoises and remains one of St Helena’s most cherished attractions.

Historic address to Seychelles National Assembly

During the visit, PM Modi will also become the first Indian Prime Minister to address the National Assembly of Seychelles.

Calling it a historic opportunity, the Prime Minister said the address reflects the strong democratic traditions and parliamentary values shared by both countries.

He is also expected to interact with members of the Indian community in Seychelles, acknowledging their contribution in strengthening the friendship between the two nations over several generations.

The Indian diaspora has played a key role in promoting cultural and economic ties while serving as a bridge between India and Seychelles.

Focus on maritime cooperation and regional security

India and Seychelles share close strategic cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region. Maritime security remains one of the key pillars of bilateral relations, with both countries working together to ensure a secure, peaceful and prosperous region.

PM Modi expressed confidence that the visit would further deepen longstanding bilateral ties while advancing cooperation under India’s Vision MAHASAGAR.

Officials expect discussions to cover maritime surveillance, capacity building, digital cooperation, cybersecurity, disaster management and regional connectivity.

Several memorandums of understanding are also expected to be signed during the visit.

Strengthening India-Seychelles partnership

The Prime Minister’s visit comes at a landmark moment as both countries celebrate five decades of diplomatic relations. Beyond the ceremonial events, the visit aims to reinforce strategic cooperation and expand collaboration in emerging sectors.

Jonathan’s meeting with PM Modi adds a unique and symbolic element to the visit, bringing global attention to one of the world’s oldest living creatures while highlighting Seychelles’ rich natural heritage.

With diplomatic engagements, parliamentary interactions and new cooperation agreements on the agenda, the State Visit is expected to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between India and Seychelles.
