HAVERI: Jondalagatti village in Haveri district has earned the unusual reputation of being called the ‘Village of Bachelors‘, as eligible men here face rejection from prospective brides—not because of personal shortcomings, but due to the village’s lack of basic amenities.
With over 200 residents, the village has more than 20 eligible bachelors unable to find partners, as women refuse matrimonial alliances citing poor infrastructure, absence of healthcare facilities, lack of mobile network, and frequent wild animal threats. This has also resulted in the local primary school seeing no new enrolments, with only five students remaining.
Villagers, predominantly from the Maratha community, voiced their concerns at a recent Jana Spandana meeting with MLA Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan. Many men have resorted to marrying outside their caste or even widows, as alliances within their community continue to fall through. Families of married sons also prefer living away from the village due to its harsh conditions.
Residents are hoping for urgent government intervention to improve connectivity, transport, and facilities to reverse this troubling trend.
