Union Railway Minister V. Somanna has made a notable announcement regarding the Chikkamagalur-Belur-Alur railway project, confirming its anticipated completion within the next three years. During a recent media interaction after visiting the Hassanamba Devi temple with his family, Somanna praised the district administration for ensuring well-organised access to the temple, underscoring his appreciation for local governance.
The railway project is expected to significantly enhance connectivity in the region. Somanna detailed that the district collector has already issued notifications for the acquisition of 585 acres of land required for the railway line, with plans for the land to be handed over soon. This development marks a crucial step in advancing the project and facilitating better transportation links in the area.
In his address, Somanna highlighted his efforts since assuming office, mentioning the initiation of 11 railway projects and the installation of 1,800 new railway lines across Karnataka. He provided updates on ongoing constructions in various regions, including Tumkur, Rayadurga, Davanagere, and Gadag, showcasing the government’s commitment to improving railway infrastructure.
Furthermore, Somanna announced that the state is embarking on several railway projects worth ₹43,000 crore, many of which have been delayed for years. This investment aims to modernise and expand the railway network, enhancing service delivery and efficiency.
With 98% of the extensive 44,000-km double-line railway network electrified, efforts are underway to expedite the installation of new lines to meet growing demands. Somanna pointed out that 104 Vande Bharat trains are currently operational, connecting 294 district centres across 24 states, with 10 of these services available within Karnataka. The introduction of 30,000 new coaches is also in progress, which will enable the addition of three to four coaches to each passenger train, thereby increasing capacity and service frequency.
In an exciting development, the minister announced a new memo train service from Tumkur to Bengaluru and expressed plans to introduce a service from Hassan to Bengaluru, offering a 60% subsidy rate. These initiatives aim to provide affordable travel options for residents and promote greater accessibility.
Somanna shared ambitious goals for the Indian Railways, stating that it currently ranks fifth globally and aspires to achieve third place in the near future. He noted that Prime Minister Modi will be reviewing the department’s progress during an upcoming meeting on November 1-2, signalling the government’s commitment to railway development and operational excellence.
In a significant policy shift, Somanna announced plans to re-evaluate the railway passes previously available to journalists and senior citizens. He argued that these passes were primarily benefiting affluent individuals and stressed that they should be reserved for deserving candidates. Somanna conveyed his intention to advocate for the reinstatement of railway pass privileges, expressing confidence that the Prime Minister would support this initiative, ensuring that the system benefits those who genuinely require assistance.
Union Railway Minister V. Somanna’s recent announcements herald a new chapter for railway development in Karnataka, with significant investments and strategic projects on the horizon. The completion of the Chikkamagalur-Belur-Alur railway project within three years, along with enhancements to existing services, reflects a robust commitment to improving transportation infrastructure. As the railway network continues to expand and modernise, the benefits for residents and the broader economy are poised to be substantial.
