Areca Nut Farmers In Shivamogga Face Uncertainty After Cancer Risk Report

A recent report from the International Agency for Research onCancer (IARC), a WHO affiliate, has raised alarm among Karnataka’s farming community. The findings suggest that areca nut, a major crop in the state, contains a carcinogenic substance, leading to widespread anxiety among growers in Shivamogga and neighboring regions.

In Shivamogga, areca nut is cultivated on over 1.21 lakh hectares, making it a crucial cash crop. The crop, which is also grown in districts like Uttara Kannada and Chikkamagaluru, plays a vital role in the livelihoods of many farmers. Despite the crop’s financial importance, the new health concerns are casting doubt on its future. Currently, the price for a good-quality batch of areca nuts is Rs 49,898 per tonne, but growers fear the report might result in declining prices or restricted market access.

H.S. Basavarajappa, president of the State Farmers’ Association, criticized the report, calling for further scrutiny. He highlighted that a similar claim had previously been investigated by the Karnataka government, which found no evidence linking areca nut to cancer. Farmers are worried the report could harm the crop’s reputation.

Additional challenges, including unpredictable rainfall, crop diseases, and foreign imports lowering prices, have only intensified the struggle for areca nut farmers. With their livelihoods at stake, farmers are urging the government to act swiftly and ensure the continued viability of the industry.
