Starting his day at 5 am with a glass of warm water mixed with lemon and honey, followed by a walk, cycling, and a nutritious vegetarian diet, Chandrakantha K V, 59, embodies simplicity and purpose. An engineer from Shivamogga, he works for the Ministry of Defence in Bengaluru and has transformed 450 lives through his unwavering commitment to blood donation.
Motivated by the principle of “Make A Difference” (MAD), Chandrakantha’s O+ blood type has enabled him to donate an extraordinary 346 times, amounting to 173 litres of blood. His journey began during his engineering days at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore, in 1986, when he donated blood at a college camp.
After years of annual donations, a meeting with Alphonse Kurian of the Lions Club Blood Line in 1998 deepened his dedication. In 2015, he became a stem cell donor, aiding a young girl in Telangana and a child in Gujarat battling blood cancer—rare matches that changed lives.
With 60 whole blood donations, 281 platelet donations, and four white blood cell contributions, he emphasizes the irreplaceability of human blood and the pressing demand in hospitals. Chandrakantha’s wife, a nutritionist, plays a key role in his journey, supporting his healthy lifestyle.
To those hesitant to donate, he says, “Picture needing blood for a loved one, only to face refusal. Choose humanity.”
