On Saturday, former Goa MLA Lavoo Mamlatdar tragically passed away at a hotel in Belagavi, Karnataka, just moments after an altercation with an auto driver. Authorities have arrested the suspect involved in the assault, confirmed a police spokesperson.
Mamlatdar, 68, was in Belagavi on a business trip, located about 120 km from Panaji. The altercation reportedly began when Mamlatdar and the auto driver were involved in a minor traffic mishap. The situation soon escalated, with the driver reportedly attacking Mamlatdar physically several times, as captured by CCTV footage.
Before entering politics in 2012, Mamlatdar had a distinguished career as a deputy superintendent of police in Goa. He was a prominent member of the Congress party, and his sudden demise has shocked the local community.
Following the assault, Mamlatdar made his way to a hotel, where he collapsed on the stairs. He was swiftly transported to a nearby government hospital, but medical staff pronounced him dead upon arrival.
This tragic incident has prompted authorities to take swift action, and the assailant is currently in custody. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mamlatdar’s death is ongoing.
