Police have arrested Komulu Mutyala Chandru, a suspected Maoist allegedly involved in the 2005 massacre of seven policemen and a bus cleaner at Venkatammanahalli village in Karnataka’s Tumakuru district. Chandru, a resident of Garaladinne Keshavapura in Andhra Pradesh, was apprehended by authorities on Wednesday.
Chandru was reportedly part of a gang of around 300 Maoists who orchestrated the deadly siege on a police camp at Venkatammanahalli. The brutal attack occurred on February 11, 2005, at approximately 10:30 p.m., resulting in the deaths of seven policemen and one civilian, and injuring five others.
At the time of his arrest, Chandru was employed as a civic worker with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Following his capture, he has been sent to judicial custody, according to police sources.
The ambush, which shook the region, involved nearly 300 armed Maoists who launched a coordinated attack on the police camp. The incident left a lasting impact on the local community and law enforcement agencies, highlighting the persistent threat posed by Maoist insurgency in certain areas.
Chandru’s arrest is a significant breakthrough in the long-standing case, bringing a key suspect to justice nearly two decades after the tragic event. Authorities continue to investigate and pursue other individuals involved in the 2005 massacre.
