Udupi: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Udupi unit, has urged Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T K to take urgent steps to address the severe shortage of public bus services on routes connecting Nitte, citing growing safety concerns for students.

Students forced to travel dangerously

Thousands of students commute daily to Nitte College in Karkala taluk from various parts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. However, inadequate public transport has resulted in severe overcrowding, with many forced to travel on footboards, putting their lives at risk.

Recently, a student reportedly slipped while travelling on the footboard, narrowly avoiding a serious accident. ABVP leaders warned that unless corrective measures are implemented immediately, a major mishap could occur.

Earlier sanction stalled due to legal challenge

According to ABVP, the government had earlier sanctioned a bus service for this route, but the move was challenged legally by private bus operators, stalling its implementation. With insufficient private buses available, students continue to face hazardous travel conditions.

Past incidents highlight safety gaps

The organisation reminded authorities that despite the tragic death of student Janith Shetty in August last year, no concrete action has been taken to ensure bus safety. Following the incident, police had assured that all buses would be fitted with doors and safety features, but ABVP claims these measures remain largely unimplemented.

Key demands presented to authorities

ABVP submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner with the following demands:

  • Increase the number of buses, especially government-operated services, on Nitte-bound routes.

  • Strictly prevent overloading of buses beyond capacity.

  • Ensure all buses are fitted with doors on a mandatory basis.

  • Enforce speed control measures to enhance passenger safety.

    • The memorandum was submitted by ABVP district convener Shreyas Anchan and other activists, who emphasised the urgency of addressing these concerns before another accident occurs.
