Call For Basic Amenities Shillekyatha Community Seeks Support In Udupi

Santhosh Bajal, honorary consultant of the Udupi District Vocational Nomad (Shillekyata) Rights Committee, passionately appealed for basic amenities, including free house plots, for the nomadic Shillekyatha community. Speaking at a press conference hosted by the Coastal Vocational Nomad (Shillekyata) Rights Committee on June 18, Bajal highlighted the dire conditions faced by the community.

He emphasized that the Shillekyatha people, recognized by the Karnataka government as wanderers, currently reside in temporary tents without access to essential facilities. Despite efforts to settle and educate their children for the past 25 years, they continue to face challenges, including a recent incident of physical assault by local fishermen.

Bajal criticized the authorities for negligence and lack of support, noting that despite lodging complaints and seeking help from district administration, their grievances remain unaddressed. Issues such as lack of documentation affecting their housing and ration card discrepancies have further exacerbated their plight.

“If our plea for assistance is ignored, we will be compelled to protest,” Bajal warned, underscoring the community’s determination to seek justice and recognition of their rights.
