The road linking Malpe Beach, Malpe Port, and fisheries near Adi Udupi is in dire condition, plagued by deep potholes and persistent waterlogging. This deteriorating infrastructure is causing significant challenges for commuters and posing serious safety risks.
The situation has deteriorated further due to delays in the road-widening project under the Malpe-Thirthahalli initiative. Incomplete construction and ongoing traffic have exacerbated the issue, resulting in potholes filled with rainwater, making them difficult for drivers to navigate and increasing the likelihood of accidents.
The Malpe-Thirthahalli NH 169A project, intended to expand the road into a four-lane highway, has been stalled primarily due to slow land acquisition processes, which are now nearing completion. Construction is expected to resume soon, with a projected completion date of December 2024. Funded by the union road transport ministry at a cost of Rs 70 crore and implemented by the National Highway Authority of India, the project will connect key locations including Thirthahalli, Megaravalli, Agumbe, Hebri, and Malpe.
This vital route, serving major tourist destinations, experiences heavy traffic, and its hazardous condition is deterring visitors. Local residents and commuters, including rickshaw driver Sandeep, have voiced frustration over the road’s dangerous state. Sandeep described the road as “dangerous” for the past two years, noting that temporary fixes like gravel filling wash away during rains, worsening the problem. He highlighted the additional strain on vehicle maintenance and the complaints from passengers facing higher fares due to detours.
Despite numerous complaints, authorities have yet to address the issues. Sandeep suggested that if officials had to experience the road’s conditions firsthand in auto rickshaws instead of luxury vehicles, they might be more motivated to expedite repairs and ensure safety. An immediate temporary solution is essential to facilitate safe travel on this crucial route.
