Udupi: An FIR has been registered against Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna following controversial remarks allegedly made during a protest organised against the Congress and the ‘Cockroach Party’ in Udupi on July 28. The case was registered after Congress leaders lodged a complaint, alleging that the legislator’s statements were inflammatory.

Police have initiated an investigation into the matter and have served a notice on the MLA as part of the legal process.

Controversial remarks at protest

According to the complaint, Suvarna allegedly stated during the protest that “just as the Babri Masjid was demolished, Rahul Gandhi’s dynasty will also be destroyed.”

The speech drew sharp criticism from Congress leaders, who accused the BJP MLA of making provocative and objectionable remarks during the public gathering.

The complaint also alleged that Suvarna claimed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was under the influence of narcotic substances and made comments targeting his family lineage.

FIR registered after Congress complaint

Based on the complaint filed by Congress leaders, the Udupi Police registered a First Information Report against the MLA.

Police are examining whether the statements allegedly made during the protest amount to offences under the relevant provisions of law.

Officials said the investigation is in its preliminary stage, and further action will be taken based on the evidence collected during the probe.

Police serve notice to MLA

On the evening of July 29, the investigating officer attached to the Udupi Police Station visited Suvarna’s residence and served him a notice in connection with the case.

Police said the MLA accepted the notice issued as part of the investigation.

Serving a notice is a routine legal procedure that enables investigators to seek cooperation from the accused during the course of the inquiry.

Probe underway

Investigators are treating the complaint as one involving alleged hate speech and are examining the speech delivered at the protest, including available video recordings and other evidence.

Police will record statements from the complainants and other witnesses before deciding on the next course of action.
