Udupi: A fisherman lost his life after accidentally falling into the Arabian Sea from a fishing boat while at sea near Madikal in Uppunda village of Byndoor taluk. The incident occurred during a routine fishing trip, and despite prompt rescue efforts and medical treatment, the fisherman succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
The deceased has been identified as Harishchandra Kharvi, who had gone fishing along with other fishermen on the evening of December 15. The tragic incident has cast a pall of gloom over the local fishing community, which is still coming to terms with the sudden loss.
Accident during fishing operation
According to information provided by the police, Harishchandra was engaged in fishing activities in the middle of the sea when he accidentally lost his balance and fell off the boat. Fellow fishermen who were present on the vessel noticed the incident immediately and rushed to his aid.
He was quickly pulled out of the water and provided preliminary assistance on the boat before being brought ashore. Fishermen said that despite the rough conditions at sea, efforts were made to rescue him as swiftly as possible to prevent further complications.
Critical condition after rescue
After being rescued from the sea, Harishchandra was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Doctors reportedly stated that his condition was critical at the time of admission, as he had suffered severe injuries and complications due to the fall and prolonged exposure to seawater.
Despite continuous medical care and efforts by the hospital staff, his health did not improve. He succumbed to his injuries on the morning of December 18, three days after the incident. His death has deeply saddened family members, friends and fellow fishermen.
Fishermen face daily risks at sea
The incident once again highlights the occupational hazards faced by fishermen, who risk their lives daily while venturing into the sea for their livelihood. Accidental falls, rough weather conditions and lack of advanced safety equipment continue to pose serious threats to those engaged in fishing activities.
Members of the local fishing community said that while fishermen are trained to handle emergencies, sudden accidents in the open sea can turn fatal within minutes. They stressed the need for enhanced safety measures, including better protective gear and regular safety training.
Police register case
Following Harishchandra’s death, a case has been registered at the Byndoor police station. Police officials said the case has been taken up to document the circumstances surrounding the incident and the subsequent death.
As it appears to be an accidental fall, no foul play is suspected at this stage. However, police said all procedural formalities would be completed as part of the investigation.
Community mourns the loss
The death of Harishchandra Kharvi has triggered an outpouring of grief in the fishing hamlets of the region. Neighbours and fellow fishermen described him as an experienced fisherman who had been working at sea for several years.
Local residents said the family has been left devastated by the loss, and they urged authorities to ensure adequate support for families of fishermen who lose their lives in accidents at sea.
