Udupi: A financial dispute between two fishermen escalated into a violent clash at Malpe harbour in Udupi district on Wednesday, resulting in injuries and the registration of a case and counter case at the Malpe police station.

Dispute at harbour turns violent

According to police, the incident involved Harish and Jayesh Kotian, both engaged in the fishing business. The altercation reportedly stemmed from a monetary dispute, with Jayesh allegedly owing money to Harish.

Around 11:00 am, Harish was present at the auction dock in Malpe harbour when a group arrived in a car and confronted him. The group reportedly included Jayesh Kotian, his mother Bharathi Kotian, Uday Poojary alias Kori Uday, Shekhu Katapady, and Purushottam.

Assault and allegations

As per the complaint filed by Harish, the group allegedly abused him in Tulu before physically assaulting him. He claimed that he was grabbed by the neck and pushed onto the concrete road during the attack.

Harish further alleged that he sustained injuries, including to his private parts, during the assault. He also accused Jayesh of attempting to attack him with a knife, though he managed to escape from the situation.

Locals present at the harbour rushed Harish to a private hospital in Udupi for treatment following the incident.

Video surfaces online

A video of the alleged assault, reportedly recorded by bystanders, has surfaced on social media and is being widely circulated. Authorities are expected to examine the footage as part of their investigation.

Case and counter case registered

In a parallel development, Bharathi Kotian has filed a counter complaint against Harish, alleging wrongdoing from his side. Police have registered a counter case under similar legal provisions.

Police officials stated that both cases are currently under investigation. Statements from witnesses are being recorded, and authorities are reviewing all available evidence, including the viral video.

Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, police said.
