The Malpe Police Station arrested five persons during a late-night raid for allegedly engaging in gambling near a resort in Kadekar village of Udupi taluk.
According to police, PSI Eeranna Shiragumpi received credible information about gambling activities near the estuary of the Padukere stream on Friday night. Acting swiftly, a police team reached the location around 10.50 pm and conducted surveillance.
Gambling in public place
Police found five to six individuals seated at an old shelter in a public area, using mobile phone flashlights. Newspapers had been spread on the ground as they played the card game “Andar Bahar,” placing cash bets.
One person was reportedly handling a deck of 52 playing cards while others placed money on the newspaper. The police raided the spot, during which one individual managed to escape. Five others were apprehended.
The arrested have been identified as Nithin Raj (35) of Ambalamogaru, Ullal; Sachin R Shetty (35) of Palimaru village, Kaup taluk; Satish alias Kishore (38) of Kuthkorigudde, Kankanady; Ranjith K Ameen (39) of Surathkal; and Ravi (36) of Sadashiva Nagar, Surathkal.
The accused reportedly informed police that the person who fled was Kishore, a resident of Udyavara.
Cash and vehicles seized
Police seized playing cards, cash amounting to ₹4,90,920, four mobile phones, one additional handset, a power bank, and two vehicles collectively valued at approximately ₹34 lakh.
A case has been registered under Section 112 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Section 87 of the Karnataka Police Act. Further investigation is underway.
