Kaup: The tiled roof of a house belonging to Revathi Kundar collapsed in Ellur, Kaup during the midnight hours on Saturday, causing extensive property damage and leaving the woman with minor injuries.

The incident occurred when the rafters supporting the tiled roof suddenly broke, causing a large portion of the roof to collapse directly into the room where Revathi was sleeping.

Woman has narrow escape

Revathi was inside the room when the roof came crashing down. She managed to escape the incident with only minor injuries.

Other members of the family were sleeping in separate rooms at the time of the incident and were fortunate to escape unharmed.

The sudden collapse reportedly caused panic among the family members, who immediately moved to safety after the structure gave way.

Seventy-five per cent roof damaged

The collapse resulted in extensive damage to the house. Approximately 75 per cent of the tiled roof was completely destroyed in the incident.

Roofing materials and broken rafters fell into the house, damaging the affected portion of the building and leaving the family concerned about the safety and structural condition of the remaining section.

The total property loss has been estimated at around Rs 3 lakh.

The family is now facing the task of repairing or reconstructing the damaged portion of the house.

Village accountant inspects damage

Following the incident, the village accountant of the Ellur gram panchayat visited the house and inspected the site.

The official assessed the extent of the damage caused by the roof collapse and examined the affected portion of the house.

The inspection is expected to help determine the extent of the family’s loss and the assistance that may be available to them under applicable provisions.

The incident has also raised concerns about the condition of ageing tiled roofs, particularly during the monsoon when structures are exposed to prolonged rain and moisture.

Although the collapse caused substantial property damage, the family members’ escape without serious injuries brought relief to residents in the area.
