Udupi: A huge crater has suddenly developed in the middle of the Ambagilu–Kalsanka main road at Gundibail within Udupi City Municipal Council limits, disrupting vehicular movement and posing a serious danger to road users.
Road collapses after heavy rain
Following heavy rain on Wednesday, August 19, residents reportedly heard a loud sound in the evening and rushed to the spot. They were shocked to find that a large portion of the road had collapsed, leaving a deep pit resembling a well near the road divider.
The sudden cave-in has raised concerns among residents and motorists using the busy stretch.
Residents fear further collapse
Residents have expressed concern that the road divider could also collapse if the issue is not addressed immediately. They suspect the cave-in may have occurred near a municipal sewerage manhole, possibly due to improper sewerage-related work.
The exact cause of the collapse, however, has not been established.
Foreseeing the danger to motorists, local residents temporarily closed one side of the Ambagilu–Kalsanka road at Gundibail to prevent accidents and protect commuters.
Civic authorities begin repair work
Udupi City Municipal Council authorities inspected the site on Thursday morning following the incident. Necessary work is now being carried out to address the road collapse.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and underground infrastructure, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Residents are hoping that the damaged portion will be repaired at the earliest and that steps will be taken to prevent a similar cave-in in the future
