Udupi: Karkala Rural police have registered two separate cases and arrested two accused in connection with attempted theft and house break-in incidents reported within their jurisdiction. The arrests follow prompt investigation aided by CCTV footage and intelligence gathered by the police, officials said on Monday.

Attempted theft at credit cooperative society

One of the cases relates to an attempted theft reported on January 16, when a man allegedly tried to break into a credit cooperative society functioning within the limits of the Karkala Rural police station. According to the police, the accused attempted to gain unauthorised entry into the premises with the intention of committing theft.

Soon after the incident was reported, Karkala Rural police registered a case and launched an investigation. As part of the probe, officers examined CCTV footage installed in and around the cooperative society. The footage reportedly provided crucial leads regarding the identity and movements of the suspect.

Based on the evidence collected, the police arrested the accused on Saturday.

Accused identified as habitual offender

The arrested accused has been identified as Suresh Koraga Poojary (53), a resident of Nitte post and village in Karkala taluk. Police officials said that preliminary interrogation revealed that he is a habitual offender with a long criminal history.

According to police records, multiple theft cases have been registered against Suresh Koraga Poojary in various police station limits, including Karkala Town, Karkala Rural, Padubidri, Belthangady, Udupi Town and even in Goa. His repeated involvement in similar offences had made him a known figure among law enforcement agencies in the region, police said.

Produced before court, remanded to custody

After his arrest, Suresh Koraga Poojary was produced before a jurisdictional court. The court remanded him to judicial custody for further proceedings.

Police officials stated that further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the accused was involved in other unsolved theft or break-in cases in and around the district. Efforts are also being made to recover any stolen property linked to his previous offences.

Second case of house break-in registered

In a separate incident, Karkala Rural police also registered another case related to a house break-in within their jurisdiction. In this case, the accused allegedly attempted to trespass into a residential house with the intention of committing theft.

Following swift action, police arrested the second accused as well. Details regarding the modus operandi and the recovery of any stolen items are being verified as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police officials said both cases underline the need for increased vigilance, particularly in residential and semi-commercial areas.
