The recently asphalted Katapady-Shirva road is rapidly deteriorating, presenting significant challenges for vehicular traffic and requiring immediate repairs. The road is now riddled with numerous potholes, making it difficult for two-wheeler riders who often have to place their feet on the ground for support. During heavy rains, the road transforms into a hazardous pool, worsening the danger for motorists. Temporary fixes using gravel have already begun to erode, highlighting the need for a more permanent solution.
Potholes are particularly problematic between Achchada cross near Katapadi market, where accidents are frequent. Rainwater accumulation in these potholes makes it hard for motorists to gauge their depth, increasing the risk of accidents. Public concern has been raised about pothole issues in Subhashnagar, Kunjarugiri cross, Shankarpura, Bantakall, Panjimaru-Attinje cross near Ganapathi temple, and near Shirva Masjid.
Madhan Manipal, a local resident, has gained attention with a song he produced and performed about the road’s poor condition. His song has been well-received and resulted in a temporary repair of the road. Manipal expressed frustration over the recurring problem, emphasizing that while the temporary fix was a step in the right direction, it is unlikely to withstand the rain. He advocates for a permanent solution, such as concreting the road.
Social worker Hidayath Sahib highlighted that the issue of the road’s condition is longstanding, with frequent accidents and injuries. He criticized the lack of coordination between departments responsible for road maintenance and urged authorities to experience the road conditions firsthand to understand the gravity of the problem.
Local resident Neema Lobo also emphasized the ongoing difficulties faced by commuters. Despite the temporary repair following Manipal’s song, the road remains hazardous beyond Subhash Nagar. She stressed that the issue continues to affect residents and requires urgent and effective attention from both authorities and social reformers.
