Udupi: Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has intensified pre-monsoon safety and maintenance activities across its network as part of efforts to ensure safe and reliable train operations during the upcoming rainy season. Operating through the scenic yet geographically challenging western coastal region, the railway system requires extensive monitoring and preventive measures, particularly before the arrival of heavy monsoon conditions.

The Konkan Railway route, which passes through regions with difficult terrain and heavy rainfall-prone stretches, functions on a single-line railway system with high line capacity utilisation. Railway officials said maintaining safety and punctuality on such a network requires continuous operational management and infrastructure monitoring.

Extensive maintenance work underway

As part of its annual infrastructure preparedness measures, KRCL has initiated a range of engineering works aimed at strengthening railway infrastructure and ensuring smooth operations during the monsoon period.

The works currently underway include:

  • Cutting lowering
  • BLT repairs
  • Track lifting
  • Deep screening
  • Through-track renewal
  • PQRS maintenance

Officials stated that these engineering activities are essential for maintaining the structural strength and stability of railway tracks while improving passenger safety and travel comfort.

The maintenance programme forms an important part of Konkan Railway’s broader efforts to minimise risks associated with adverse weather conditions and maintain uninterrupted operations.

Temporary speed restrictions may affect punctuality

To safely execute the ongoing engineering activities, railway authorities have imposed temporary speed restrictions at specific sections along the route.

Officials said occasional operational blocks required for maintenance work could lead to minor delays and detention of trains in some areas. However, passengers have been informed that such measures are temporary and necessary to ensure long-term operational reliability.

According to railway authorities, most of the ongoing pre-monsoon inspections and maintenance work is expected to be completed by the end of May.

Once the works are completed, train punctuality across the route is expected to improve significantly.

Challenges of operating on a single-line route

The Konkan Railway network is regarded as one of the most challenging railway corridors in the country due to its topography and weather conditions.

The single-line system handles a high volume of passenger and freight movement, requiring precise coordination and scheduling to avoid disruptions.

Officials stated that KRCL continues to rely on robust monitoring systems and operational protocols to manage train movement efficiently. Constant supervision and optimised scheduling are being used to minimise delays while maintaining safety standards.

The route frequently experiences heavy rainfall and terrain-related challenges during the monsoon season, making preventive measures an essential part of railway operations.

Passengers to receive regular travel updates

KRCL stated that passengers will continue receiving regular information regarding train schedules and operational updates through multiple communication channels.

Travel-related information will be available through:

  • Station announcements
  • Electronic display systems
  • Official railway websites
  • Authorised mobile applications

Railway officials said timely communication allows passengers to plan their travel schedules more effectively and reduces inconvenience arising from operational adjustments.

Konkan Railway reiterated that passenger safety remains its highest priority while maintaining efficient operations and reliable travel services. The corporation stated that it will continue focusing on infrastructure upgrades and passenger facilities without compromising operational standards.
