Udupi: More than 20 activists of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) were detained by police on Friday after they attempted to stage a black flag protest over the Mekedatu issue ahead of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s visit to Kollur.

The activists had assembled near Balaipade in Udyavar, Udupi district, and were preparing to demonstrate against the Tamil Nadu government’s opposition to the proposed Mekedatu drinking water and balancing reservoir project. Police intervened before the protest could take place and took the demonstrators into preventive custody to maintain law and order.

Protest planned over Mekedatu project

According to police sources, KRV activists planned to display black flags during the Tamil Nadu chief minister’s visit as a mark of protest against Tamil Nadu’s stance on the Mekedatu project.

The project, proposed by the Karnataka government, has remained a contentious issue between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for several years. Activists argued that the project is crucial for addressing drinking water needs and balancing reservoir requirements in Karnataka.

The gathering at Balaipade was intended to draw attention to the issue and express dissatisfaction with continued opposition to the project.
